Radio Starr Matt Talks Professional Pest Control
BBC Radio Sheffield has been reporting new research into Bed Bugs by Sheffield University and presenter Steve White was talking professional pest control.
On Tuesday 20th May 2019, Dinnington-based pest controller, Matt Starr of Anston Pest Control was invited onto Radio Sheffield’s Rony Robinson Show to talk about this itchy subject.
Pest control today covers a wide range of mammals and insects, from bed bugs and fleas to squirrels, foxes, ants and wasps. Legislation makes it difficult for pest controllers to provide a humane catch and release service, so the emphasis is now on prevention.
Stopping rats, mice and other pests getting onto your property is the priority for Anston Pest Control and Starr talked about pest management programmes that make prevention better than the cure.
Pest control can be a sensitive subject, particularly for people in semi-detached or terraced properties where an infestation in one house means it is likely that adjacent properties will also be affected. Which is why Anston Pest Control take a sensitive approach to pest problems.
Professional pest control is essential
As in many sectors, there is always someone out to exploit vulnerable people and pest control is no different. This can often be reflected in high prices and over charging.
Starr has spent the last nine years building his company and reputation on providing a quality service for a fair price, as the testimonials page demonstrates.
Is pest control worth it?
The answer to this question is undoubtedly yes.
There are a number of basic steps a home or business owner can take to reduce the potential for pest problems and these include:
- Using the correct type of sealing strips under doors
- Sealing gaps in bricks and ensuring that all pipes and plumbing are sealed correctly.
- Ensure that flexible pipes on toilets are secure. It is common for rats to chew through modern plastic pipes and gain entry to buildings
- Fit a ‘Rat Flap’ non-return valve onto pipes
- Use sealing strips on the bottom of doors
- Ensure facia units are capped to stop squirrels and rats gaining access to lofts
- Fit air vent meshing to the tops of pipes
- Don’t leave food waste lying around
Starr explains: “Rodents are great climbers and highly inventive. Cavity walls offer a perfect staircase to lofts and the warmth provided by insulation makes it a home from home.
Other things you can do include making sure that rubbish is not piled against exterior walls. Where it must be left near buildings, ensure that there is at least a 1.5 metre space between the waste and the wall.”
Quotes for pest control
Pest problems will not fix themselves. If you think that you have a problem with pests of any sort, then it should be sorted out as quickly as possible.
“Don’t try and catch pests yourself, you must get it done correctly. Mammals are intelligent and cautious. Rats, for instance, will not go near something new that appears in their environment, a trap, for instance, for several days”, says Starr.
That’s why his advice to anyone with pest problems is to get a price for professional pest control and the safe rectification of the problem.
