Masonry bee – to treat or not to treat?
Many of the calls we receive at Anston Pest Control Ltd between late April and mid June for bee/wasp problems turn out to be for a type of bee known as a Masonry bee.
Masonry bees are not aggressive, they have a sting but are unable to pierce the human skin and are therefore harmless and more of a nuisance insect. Their lifespan is usually no longer than 4 – 6 weeks.
The masonry bee is an opportunist loner with a taste for old walls. What are masonry bees? ‘Masonry’ (or ‘mortar’) bees are one of those solitary types that do not nest in a colony but within individual holes in the ground and occasionally in walls in mortar joints, soft bricks and stones themselves, or cob.
We do not treat masonry bee issues as they cause no threat to public health and are essential to our ecosystem.
